                                                   Child Counseling

It is a big decision to bring your child/ teenager to a professional, and it is vital that your first experience with professional counseling be very positive. If not positive, you may seek other options which may not be as effective as counseling. I feel one of my biggest strengths is making your child feel very special during his/her initial appointment.

That is why I will not have your child attend that first session. Having your child sit alone in my waiting room or be asked to sit quietly in my office while his parents talk about him/her in the first session is not good practice.

During the initial parent session treatment goals are formulated. Therapy has a beginning, middle, and end and both myself and the parents must always be aware of the direction and stage of the therapy. I always tells parents to get their child excited about the second session, which is the child's initial session. As, the Immediate Past President of The Association For Play Therapy I learn what activities the child enjoys and emphasize them in session so your child has a fun, productive session. "Play is the child's talk and toys are the words," is a quote I frequently state to parents and the other professionals that I teach. I have given lectures to my colleagues entitled "Big Kids Play Too" which emphasizes that even teens enjoy a fun age appropriate therapy experience.

Play Therapy refers to a large number of treatment methods, including cognitive/behavioral, all of which make use of one or more of the natural benefits of play. All Play Therapy differs from regular play in that I help children systematically address and resolve their own problems. Since play is fun, it makes it easier for children/ teens to confront what is bothering them. Play allows them a safe, psychological distance from their problems and allows them to express their true thoughts and feelings in ways best suited to their developmental level. Once children have expressed and addressed their problems through play, I will be better able to help them find solutions to their problems in life.

Play Therapy can help children/teens to:

  • Take responsibility for their behavior and replace inappropriate behavior with more successful behavior
  • Develop new and creative solutions to their problems
  • Develop respect and acceptance of themselves and others
  • Learn to experience and express emotion, and to be empathic with respect to the thought and feeling of others
  • Learn new social skills
  • Cope with adolescent issues

I specialize in the treatment of children's disorders including ADHD, Bipolar disorder, Oppositional Defiant disorder, Depression, Anxiety, and Bereavement Issues as well as family and parent relationship counseling. I have had outstanding success with ADHD where medication (like Ritalin and Focalin) and other therapists have failed. Please contact me at 732-492-9132 and I will offer you a free initial phone conference.
